Research and Documentation
Our research focuses on the intersection of environmental science, historic preservation, urban planning, and Black Geography, with an emphasis on preserving historic African American cemeteries and burial sites. We use advanced geospatial analysis, sustainable practices, geo-ethnography, and community-based research to address critical issues in cemetery preservation and environmental justice. Our work provides valuable insights for scholars, genealogists, educators, and community members. Our research agenda includes:
Environmental Impact on Historic Burial Sites: This research investigates the effects of environmental factors—such as climate change, pollution, and urban encroachment—on the integrity and preservation of historic cemeteries. Through interdisciplinary studies, including soil analysis and water quality testing, we develop strategies to mitigate these impacts.
Critical Black Geography and Spatial Justice: Central to my research is the application of critical Black geography to understand the spatial dynamics of race, place, and memory in the context of cemetery preservation. I investigate how African American burial sites have been marginalized within urban planning and land use policies, advocating for more equitable treatment in the preservation and protection of these spaces.
Environmental Justice and Black Spatial Histories: My work in environmental justice critically examines how historical and contemporary planning practices have contributed to the neglect and desecration of African American cemeteries. Through archival research, oral histories, and community engagement, I seek to reclaim these spaces as sites of memory and resistance, advocating for policies that recognize and rectify these injustices.
Cultural and Historical Significance of Cemeteries: This work in cultural resource management involves extensive archival research, oral history collection, and the documentation of African American burial practices. We aim to highlight the cultural and historical importance of these sites, advocating for their preservation through scholarly research and public engagement.
Community-Based Research and Participatory Urban Planning: We engage with local communities to co-create knowledge and develop preservation strategies for historic cemeteries. By incorporating participatory GIS and community mapping into my research, we ensure that the voices of those most affected by spatial and environmental injustices are central to the planning and preservation processes.
