Advocacy and Legal Support
We are dedicated to protecting endangered cemeteries through community organizing and legal advocacy. While not a law firm, our expertise in the legal and regulatory frameworks surrounding historic cemeteries allows us to offer valuable guidance. We collaborate with local governments, attorneys, and organizations to ensure these sacred sites are properly recognized and preserved. Due to differing state regulations, our select services are available in Texas and Louisiana.
Cemetery Advocacy and Public Awareness Campaigns: Community Mobilization: Organize and lead campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of preserving Black cemeteries. This includes engaging local communities, historical societies, and advocacy groups to advocate for the protection and recognition of these sites.
Policy Advocacy: Work with local, state, and federal agencies to advocate for stronger legal protections for historic cemeteries, particularly those of African American significance. This could include drafting policy briefs, providing expert testimony, and advising on the development of preservation policies.
Regulatory Guidance and Compliance: The Regulatory Guidance and Compliance service is designed to assist cemetery stakeholders—including families, preservation groups, developers, and municipalities—in navigating the complex legal and regulatory landscape governing historic cemeteries.
Historic Designation and Preservation Application Services: Historic designations and markers are highly regarded in the field of historic preservation. These honors allow visitors to learn about the significance of the cemetery while securing resources specifically awarded to such properties.
Subject Matter Expert Witness Support: Serve as an expert witness in legal cases involving cemetery preservation, offering testimony based on your extensive knowledge of cultural resource management and cemetery preservation.
Legal Rights and Cemetery Protection Workshops: Conduct workshops and training sessions for community members, educating them on their legal rights related to cemetery preservation and how to effectively advocate for the protection of these sites.
